Remembering The Why
In the last two years our definition of normal life has changed drastically. But here in the slums or “favelas” of Fortaleza, Brazil, normal life has not changed. Poverty still impedes the success of millions of children who are hungry, dirty, and without the attention they deserve. It is so easy for us to forget this reality when we live in a society where poverty is the exception rather than the norm.
Recently a photo of a boy scavenging on a rubbish dump went viral in Brazil, a reminder that the simple pleasures and comforts of life are still out of reach for so many children living in urban poverty. See the picture and read the story here.
Children have not only had their lives and education disrupted during the pandemic, but also continue to be besieged by fear and violence. On a daily basis they experience hunger. They doubt that their future might hold anything positive or worth dreaming about. Improvised housing, overcrowding, and poor sanitation are characteristic in the slums. COVID is another deadly disease to add to the list which includes dengue fever, chikungunya, and zika virus.
