Located in Fortaleza, on the northeast coast of Brazil, Channel to Brazil for Christ serves families living in slums (favelas).

Fortaleza is the 5th largest city in Brazil, home to 2.5 million people with a population density of 22,000 people per square mile.

Slums are communities with…

  • Poor sanitation – No sewers or drains, resulting in the spread of disease and flooding in the rainy season
  • Lack of clean water and food
  • Poor healthcare and education
  • High levels of gang violence and control
  • High unemployment
  • Lack of open, safe places to play
  • Frequent family breakdowns – high levels of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse

These conditions weigh on children, resulting in anxiety, depression, as well as other physical, emotional, and mental health challenges. Most devastatingly, young people quickly give up hope that their lives matter and that they can be successful.

In this region, the public school only offers 4 hours of classes per day. Sadly, these schools are overcrowded, under-funded, and unreliable. Over 50% of students drop out by the time they are 11. However, we make a difference by providing another 4 hours of inspiring and effective education every day, either before or after the students’ public school session.

We provide a safe and clean environment for children to learn.

Our morning students attend public school in the afternoon, and we have a second session each afternoon for children who attend public school in the morning.

We also support parents with counseling, food parcels, evangelical outreach, Bible studies, and special events throughout the year.
