Helping Children With Autism And ADHD

CBC has around 30 students who have Autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. In the slums, the needs of children with these challenges are often unrecognized or misunderstood. The public schools have few resources to offer and parents don’t know where to turn for help. Two things we do know are that these children just want to succeed like others, and secondly that in a caring environment like CBC, their needs become more evident.

We frequently find that we can help in a powerful way because our students feel safe and often open up to us. We recently had a little boy struggling to concentrate on his questionnaire (exam) at the end of the month. He shared some personal concerns with his teacher and we immediately removed him from the class so that we could talk and pray with him. After this break and some help to focus his energetic body on an inflatable cushion, we watched him complete the whole exam!

The CBC team is exploring options and opportunities to better serve all of our children. We are beginning by training ourselves and learning techniques according to our capacity. One of the options is to employ a teaching assistant to provide personalized care. This would cost around $6,000 per year. Please pray us as we evaluate our options, that we will have wisdom and provision to help children with autism and ADHD learn and adapt according to their needs for life-long success.

Our goals to support Autism and aDHD

The conditions of the slums weigh on children resulting in anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. Children growing up in the slums live in a state of immense fear with little to no hope.

We work with children on a daily basis. Filling up the school day by providing an extra 4 hours of education. We want to help them succeed, stay off the streets, and stay in school. We have students in the morning who go to public school in the afternoon and vice-versa.

Our local staff in Brazil is a team of Christians with experience and knowledge in their field. Checkout our Dreambuilders page to see the services and opportunities we provide!

Not only do we reach the children, but we provide counseling for parents, food parcels, evangelical outreach, bible studies, and special events throughout the year.
